"Movement and perception begin in the brain."
The brain is able to modify its structure and function based on experience, learning and environmental stimuli.
The nervous system
Our nervous system transmits signals and information throughout the body. It consists of two main parts:
Central nervous system (CNS): the brain and spinal cord. This is where information is processed and control decisions are made.
Peripheral nervous system (PNS): a network of fine nerve fibers that extend throughout the body, receiving signals from the sensory organs and transmitting them to the central nervous system (CNS).
The PNS is divided into:
1. Somatic nervous system: Controls conscious activities such as muscle movements and the conscious perception of sensory stimuli.
2. Autonomic nervous system: Regulates unconscious processes such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, and body temperature.
The nervous system coordinates all bodily functions and enables us to process information, respond to stimuli, and adapt to changes in our environment.
