Myelination

Myelination is the protective wrapping of the axon of the nerve cells with an insulating layer called myelin. This accelerates and improves signal transmission in the brain. Myelination begins before birth and continues during early childhood, adolescence and into early adulthood. During this time, increased myelination occurs, leading to faster and more precise communication in the brain. It is a dynamic process that can vary from individual to individual, depending on genetic factors, environmental conditions and the age of the person.

To promote myelination, regular physical activity, mental stimulation, a balanced diet, adequate sleep and stress management are also important.
